Improving access to water through check dams
In the year 2018, SP Group Companies got together with the aim of providing access to water by recharging the water tables in some of the most water-scarce regions in India. The program is implemented in the Alwar district of Rajasthan.
The program design is a partnership model where the villagers are highly involved in the entire project, right from site identification to project design and construction. The villagers contribute in the form of physical labour and also financially in terms of procuring materials. This ensures responsibility and ownership among them towards the dam structures.
In addition to providing access to water, the Group and its on-ground implementation partner strive to create social transformation in the villages. The project is only implemented in villages where the community agrees to stop age-old unruly traditions of child marriage, dowry system and unhealthy lifestyle habits like alcoholism, gambling and smoking.
Milestones Achieved:
- 48 check dams constructed and 125 community water plants set up
- 8.42 crore cubic feet of water harvesting capacity in a short span of 3 years, benefitting 1,12,000 villagers
- Crop cycle increased from 1 crop to at least 2-3 crops annually
- Increase in annual income of farmers by about 33%
