Farmer Livelihood Enhancement
In the year 2019-2020, SP Group partnered with Global Parli in an ambitious project to transform the lives of farmers from one of the most impoverished areas in the central Maharashtra-Beed district. The Project envisaged educating and building capability among farmers on alternate cropping patterns. Since the majority of farmer families were dependent on cash crops and over the past 5 years monsoons were extremely poor, the farmers were starved of livelihood and earning opportunities.
With the support of technical experts and agriculturists, the farmers have been supported to plant fruit trees which can enhance their income and can survive in poor rainfall conditions. Carefully-selected tree species which can fetch better financial returns, techniques like drip irrigation, farm ponds and skilling on pest/virus management have been implemented by the farmers.
While the overall project is aimed at transforming the lives of farmers by helping them plant 7M fruit trees, SP has supported a section of these. The initial enthusiasm and support from the farmers is extremely encouraging and the target has been surpassed.
- Skilled 1,100 farmers with alternate farming techniques
- More than 5,40,000 fruit trees have been planted
- The annual earning of many farmers has increased from a mere 30,000/acre to about 1,00,000/acre
